About the Herbs & Dietary Supplements SIG

The purpose of the Herbs & Dietary Supplements Special Interest Group (SPIG) is to foster the interest of its members in the study of herbs and dietary supplements through an exchange of ideas, resources, and expertise. Domains of knowledge regarding herbs and dietary supplements that include topics such as their history, cultural and ethnic diversity considerations, epidemiology, basic science, pharmacology and kinetics, clinical efficacy, clinical toxicology, and drug-herb/dietary supplement interactions. Public health policy implications for efficacy, safety, and poisoning prevention would also be within the group’s scope of interests.

Activities of the SPIG includes:

  1. Organizing periodic symposia on herbs & dietary supplements at regional and/or national meetings such as the NACCT,
  2. Developing mechanisms to inform members of new information concerning herbs and dietary supplements,
  3. Encouraging intellectual discourse regarding herbs and dietary supplements,
  4. Enhancing of the ability of poison control center personnel to respond effectively to queries about or toxic exposures involving herbs & dietary supplements,
  5. Encouraging new research initiatives related to the evolving science of herbs and dietary supplements,
  6. Developing a wide variety of resources (e.g. literature, Internet, network of professional) nationally so as disseminate useful and requisite expertise regarding specific herbs and dietary supplements,
  7. Promoting academic, scholarly, and research partnerships and liaisons between AACT members and individuals, organizations, and institutions internationally, whose interests include herbs and dietary supplements.
